Simulated
reality - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
-
Simulated reality is the proposition that reality could be
simulated—often computer simulated—to a degree
indistinguishable from "true" reality. It could contain
conscious minds which may or may not know that they are living
inside a simulation. In its strongest form, the "simulation
hypothesis" claims it is probable that we are actually living
in such a simulation.
-
This is different from the current, technologically achievable
concept of virtual reality. Virtual reality is easily
distinguished from the experience of "true" reality;
participants are never in doubt about the nature of what they
experience. Simulated reality, by contrast, would be hard or
impossible to distinguish from "true" reality.
-
The idea of a simulated reality raises several questions:
-
* Is it possible, even in principle, to tell whether we are in a
simulated reality?
-
* Is there any difference between a simulated reality and a "real"
one?
-
* How should we behave if we knew that we were living in a
simulated reality?

Digital
Physics – Wikipedia
In physics and cosmology,
digital physics is a collection of theoretical perspectives based on
the premise that the universe is, at heart, describable by
information, and is therefore computable. Therefore , the universe
can be conceived as either the output of a computer program or as a
vast, digital computation device (or, at least, mathematically
isomorphic to such a device).
Digital physics is
grounded in one or more of the following hypotheses, listed in order
of increasing boldness. The universe, or reality, is:
*
Essentially informational (although not every informational ontology
need be digital);
* Essentially digital;
* Itself a colossal
computer;
* The output of a simulated reality exercise.
- Zuse's
Thesis: The Universe is a Computer
Konrad Zuse (1910-1995;
pronounce: "Conrud Tsoosay") not only built the first
programmable computers (1935-1941) and devised the first higher-level
programming language (1945), but also was the first to suggest (in
1967) that the entire universe is being computed on a computer,
possibly a cellular automaton (CA). He referred to this as
"Rechnender Raum" or Computing Space or Computing Cosmos.
Many years later similar ideas were also published / popularized /
extended by Edward Fredkin (1980s), Jürgen Schmidhuber (1990s - see
overview), and more recently Stephen Wolfram (2002) (see comments and
Edwin Clark's review page )

Wolfram: A New Kind of Science
This long-awaited work
from one of the world's most respected scientists presents a series
of dramatic discoveries never before made public. Starting from a
collection of simple computer experiments--illustrated in the book by
striking computer graphics--Stephen Wolfram shows how their
unexpected results force a whole new way of looking at the operation
of our universe. Wolfram uses his approach to tackle a remarkable
array of fundamental problems in science, from the origins of
apparent randomness in physical systems, to the development of
complexity in biology, the ultimate scope and limitations of
mathematics, the possibility of a truly fundamental theory of
physics, the interplay between free will and determinism, and the
character of intelligence in the universe.
In this
book he advances the hypothesis that the universe and everything is
being computed by a simple program.
- A
review of “A New Kind of Science”
Wolfram claims in his
book that the universe and everything is being computed by a simple
program. This review illustrates that this idea is certainly not new
to science, and it gives links to the prior work of Zuse.

Epistemological
Problems of Perception (Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy)
-
The historically most central epistemological issue concerning
perception, to which this article will be almost entirely devoted,
is whether and how beliefs about physical objects and about the
physical world generally can be justified or warranted on the
basis of sensory or perceptual experience — where it is
internalist justification, roughly having a reason to think that
the belief in question is true, that is mainly in question. This
issue, commonly referred to as “the problem of the external
world,” divides into two closely related sub-issues, which
correspond to the first two main sections below. The first of
these issues has to do with the nature of sensory experience and
its relation to the physical world; it is typically formulated as
the question of what are the immediate objects of awareness in
sensory experience or, in a variant but essentially equivalent
terminology, of what is given in such experience. The second issue
has to do with the way in which beliefs about the physical world
are justified on the basis of such sensory experience.

The
Philosophy of Freedom - Rudolf Steiner
-
THE PHILOSOPHY OF FREEDOM can be seen as the crowning achievement
of nineteenth-century philosophy. It answers all the problems of
knowledge and morality that philosophers had raised, argued over,
and eventually left unsolved with the conclusion that “we can
never know”. Yet this great achievement received no recognition,
and only when Steiner had acquired a large following of people
thankful for all that he had given them of his spiritual
revelation, did there arise the desire to read also his earlier
work, upon which he always insisted his whole research was firmly
based. Perhaps if Steiner had spent the rest of his life
expounding his philosophy, he would today be recognized throughout
the world as a major philosopher; yet his achievement in going
forward himself to develop the science of the spirit is much the
greater, and this will surely be recognized in time... it might
even be better to consider the Philosophy of Freedom not just as a
chapter of philosophy, but as the key to a whole way of life.
-
-
Considered just as a piece of philosophy, it might in any case be
thought out of date, having only historical interest. For
instance, a modern scientist may well believe that any philosopher
who spoke up against atomism has been proved wrong by the success
of atomic physics. But this would be to misunderstand the nature
of philosophy. Steiner deals in turn with each possible point of
view, illustrating each one with an example from the literature,
and then showing the fallacies or shortcomings that have to be
overcome. Atomism is justified only so long as it is taken as an
aid to the intellect in dealing with the forces of nature; it is
wrong if it postulates qualities of a kind that belong to
perceived phenomena, but attributes them to a realm that by
definition can never be perceived...
-
-
Man ultimately has his fate in his own hands, though the path to
this condition of freedom is a long and a hard one, in the course
of which he must develop merciless knowledge of himself and
selfless understanding of others... “a view of the world based
on spiritual activity, on action, on thinking and feeling that
arise from the individual human spirit.”
-
Jean Gebser
-
The Swiss philosopher and poet Jean Gebser belonged to that rare
Socratic breed. He was a man of extraordinary vision who did not
allow himself to be seduced by his learning, but intrepidly pushed
beyond the boundaries of accepted truth. He likened modern
philosophy to the "picking apart of a rose." His
founÂÂdational work on the evolution of human
consciousness and culture is among this century's finest
contributions to our modern self-understanding.
-
-
In a nutshell, what Gebser succeeded in demonstrating through
painstaking documentation and analysis was this: Hidden beneath
the apparent chaos of our times is an emergent new order. The
disappearance of the pre-Einsteinian world-view. with its
creator-god and clockwork universe as well as its naive faith in
progress. is more than a mere breakdown. It is also a new
beginning. In fact, long before the apostles of a "new age"
arrived on the scene, Jean Gebser spoke of our period as one of
the great turning points in human history. What makes his work so
appealing and relevant is that it offers a unique perspective on
human history and the present global crisis. When Gebser's study
on the unfolding of human consciousness was first published it was
considered one of the most controversial intellectual creations of
our era. This is still true; his ideas challenge not only those of
the establishment but also many of the new contenders.

Eugen
Rosenstock-Huessy
-
Rosenstock-Huessy was as interdisciplinary a scholar as you are
ever likely to meet. As he himself expressed it at the end of his
major work Out of Revolution: "I have survived decades of
study and teaching in scholastic and academic sciences. Every one
of their venerable scholars mistook me for the intellectual type
which he most despised. The atheist wanted me to disappear into
Divinity, the theologian into sociology, the sociologists into
history, the historians into journalism, the journalists into
metaphysics, the philosophers into law, and - need I say it? - the
lawyers into hell, which as a member of our present world, I never
had left."
-
Precisely the fact that he was so very interdisciplinary may help
to explain why Rosenstock-Huessy, who has been hailed by many of
the leading intellectuals of our time, remains relatively unknown
to this day... "Rosenstock-Huessy was a prophet who, like
many great prophets, failed in his own time, but whose time may
now be coming. In spite of - and because of - its unconventional
character, Out of Revolution has much to teach us about how
history should be understood, and even more important, how the
history of the second millennium of the Christian era can serve as
a prophesy of the future of the human race."

About Organizations as Systems
-
Recently, management studies has come to view organizations from a
new perspective: a systems perspective. This systems perspective
may seem quite basic. Yet, decades of management training and
practices in the workplace have not followed from this
perspective. Only recently, with tremendous changes facing
organizations and how they operate, have educators and managers
come to face this new way of looking at things. This
interpretation has brought about a significant change (or paradigm
shift) in the way management studies and approaches organizations.

thinking that is becoming irrelevant. It’s a voice that speaks
to narrow short term financial interests with little regard for
the costs to society and our world. This model is no longer
sustainable and has led to the degradation of our communities, our
economy and our environment. Business has been silent on the big
issues of our time. Energy, global warming, health care,
education, the role of business and fiscal irresponsibility are
just some of the challenges we face. These are such core issues

counter to effective solutions. The time for silence is over and
we need a new voice of business that speaks the truth as we know

fragmentation, presuming that cooperation is more in line with the
future we need than competition. CHE will thus find innovative
solutions for some of the most complex problems facing the world
today, encouraging the development of new tools for making sense
of the change that surrounds us, as well as actively helping
humanity to embrace new values and perspectives that could provide
the framework for significant change. The (CHE) will provide the

on Mass Collaboration Trends » Where Do They Find The Time?
-
If you take Wikipedia as a kind of unit, all of Wikipedia, the
whole project — every page, every edit, every talk page, every
line of code, in every language that Wikipedia exists in — that
represents something like the cumulation of 100 million hours of
human thought. Then Shirky asks us to compare that to television.
He says we Americans collectively spend about 200 billion hours of
our time each year watching the tube...

on Luddites, internet and freedom » Whose Technology Is It
Anyway?
-
The internet's output is data, but its product is freedom, lots
and lots of freedom. Freedom of speech, freedom of the press,
freedom of association, the freedom of an unprecedented number of
people to say absolutely anything they like at any time, with the
reasonable expectation that those utterances will be globally
available, broadly discoverable at no cost, and preserved for far
longer than most utterances are, and possibly forever. Keen is
right in understanding that this massive supply-side shock to
freedom will destabilize and in some cases destroy a number of
older social institutions.

OPEN
ORGANIZATIONS WebHome
-
The goal of this project is to explain how to set up and maintain
transparent, accountable and truly participative communities. The
desire for open organizations stems from a widespread
dissatisfaction not only with the formal power structures found in
governments and corporations, but also with the informal
structures found in many voluntary and activist groups... Open
Organizations is one of many initiatives that attempt to propose
solutions to this problem. It is focused on elaborating a concrete
framework for action.

co-create and empower
-
The Open Forum page is about Dialog and Conversations, how to
organise meetings and gatherings, and help groups come to sharing
meanings and concerted action, about a much needed dialog- and
decision culture and about how we can empower and give voice,
co-create and invite change and surprise in any group, or
generations and cultures dialogues, or with senior "systems"
people.
